Your guide to turning your house into a home... one DIY project and yard sale find at a time

Christmas Living Room + Farmhouse inspired Christmas tree

December 19, 2016

Today I am sharing my living room all decked out for Christmas!  Our new fixer upper house is still very much in the “fixing up” stage but the one room that is probably the most done is the living room.  So I went all out for Christmas in this room this year and have just so enjoyed it this season.  All the Christmas touches in this room and a few in other places sure have helped this home feel pretty and so much more like home!

I shared my Christmas mantel earlier this month – you can see all the details on that here.  Some DIY farmhouse shutters, an old window, some yard sale finds and some fun finds from Kirkland’s all came together to create this simple Farmhouse inspired mantel.  I wanted to do a simple, a bit rustic, Farmhouse inspired theme this year and I think it came together pretty well.  I would love to add to this even more for next year so I will for sure be checking out some after Christmas clearance sales next week!

I used my clearance Walmart flocked tree again this year.  If you are wanting a flocked tree on a budget – I would definitely see if you can find one of these trees at your local store on clearance after Christmas.  The flocking is fairly thick and doesn’t shed much at all, it is prelit, and has these pretty pinecones on it too.

I added these large red stars from Michael’s to add some of the rustic Farmhouse theme.  I went with a red and white with touches of black for my color scheme this year.

And of course these sort of shiplap inspired word blocks from Kirkland’s added more farmhouse touches.

I am finishing up wrapping presents this year and of course continuing the red, black and white theme with that too.

The wood star and red striped tree skirt came from Home Decorators collection and I used them along with the chalky finish painted snowflakes on my tree last year.  I don’t use all new things each year – I find that you can mix and match things from seasons past and add a few new things and create a whole new look for very little.  I try to think of a color scheme I would like to try for the next Christmas NOW, and if I don’t already have ornaments in that color, I browse the after Christmas sales for a big box of shatterproof ornaments on clearance after Christmas and anything else I see and get a whole new look for next year for super cheap!

See those flocked pinecones on this tree?  I just love them!

So different this year having wood floors for the first time!  I love how the lights reflect on them.

The centerpiece on my coffee table this year is this set of rustic trees from Kirkland’s with some fresh greens and faux snow – I just can’t pass up chippy paint!

I’ll do an updated post on the living room after Christmas but I finally got some curtains and blind hung in here and hung the wreaths I used in my Christmas kitchen in the windows.  I love the touch that added in here!

This fireplace will be getting a makeover soon – still deciding if we want to whitewash or do some kind of mortar smear effect.  But I do love having a bigger/taller hearth to decorate this year.

I’m working with a different lens on my camera because one of mine got broken this year. Sad smile  Hoping Santa will bring a new one later this week… So here’s the best shot I can get of the whole living room.

I’ll be back on Wednesday to share some shots from all around the house in a small home tour – definitely a bit less than last year but with the changes of a little baby keeping me busy and a house still being fixed up I am really happy with what I got done and how it all turned out this year!

I would love to know what theme or colors you decorate with for Christmas!  Do you change it up a little each year with a different color or theme?  Pick your theme the year before so you snag those clearance deals?

Love your tree and the theme you chose for this year….so pretty! Love the farmhouse touches…. I don’t do a theme for our tree – being in the military and living/being stationed in different places, we have collected ornaments from all over! I use those, as well as ornaments my boys have made or received over the years. The tree definitely brings back a lot of memories each year when we are decorating it! I also collect Santas, so I ususally incorporate those into the decor – this year I have them going up the stairs. I would love to do a theme, at some point – I think it would be fun to pick a theme, color scheme, etc. I have done a small patriotic tree before….in addition to our large family tree. Thanks for sharing – always love seeing your decor and good ideas!

I’m curious, what camera do you use? I do a different theme every year. This year only one person has guessed my theme, see http://wp.me/pKNzn-1ba. I reuse ornaments from the previous years when they fit my current theme. I also make ornaments, a kissing ball, and a wreath every year. For me, the best part of Christmas is decorating!

I am wondering if your flocked tree is really messy. My experience with flocked things in the past made me avoid them, but they do look pretty. Have they improved lately? I see them everywhere now. I love your decorating!

I’ve been waiting to see your Christmas decor…and you didn’t disappoint! LOVE everything about it! Thinking next year we’ll do a flocked tree. (Will be looking for one in the after-Christmas sales). We hang our stockings from the mantel so I just put the garland on top of the mantel with some decorations, but I really like your swagged garland hanging from the mantel. Do you hang stockings? Have a very merry first Christmas in your new home–bet you’ll great many wonderful memories!

That should read “bet you’ll *make* many wonderful memories! ” (auto-correct hates me!)

The swag on your mantel is so pretty! Our tree is always the same – the collection of 40- years-of-marriage ornaments! We enjoy seeing them each year as we hang them on our tree. Christmas blessings as you celebrate your daughter’s first Christmas with you!

My color scheme on my tree this year is red, white, blue & silver. I change the colors every year but always have my white ornaments because they are angels and snowflakes and crosses. I have enough ornaments for every year but if I see something I especially like and it’s cheap, I will get it to add to my collection. I like to also put “word” ornaments on my tree…… peace, joy, noel etc. Your home is beautiful! always look forward to seeing what your yard sale and thrift store buys are and how you incorporate them into your home. Merry Christmas! Enjoy the holidays with your precious little one!

Everything looks beautiful! We tend to do eclectic every year, but we do have general themes for each of our 5 trees. We like to move things around and add bargain and handmade items year to year. I have 2 Walmart clearance trees, and they are awesome. Even at regular price, I think Walmart has the prettiest trees for the price! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
