Use Vinegar as the fabric softener instead of the store bought stuff. We have high mineral content in our water and when we first moved here, my beautiful white shirts and socks all turned gray. My sister told me about vinegar being a whitener and will disinfect as a bonus. Whites turned white again and I won’t use anything else. I have a HE washing machine and I use vinegar when it tells me it is time to run Affresh through it. Excellent product!

I noticed you had previously painted back in 2021 a grayish color. Did you re-do it recently and how did your previous 2021 held up? I have a big project and paint it only the steps leading to the back door, but I’m having second thoughts now. It would really help if you can help clear up some confusion.

Comment on DIY Rustic Wood Shelves + DIY toilet paper holder made with plumbing pipe hardware by Patrice Gray https://thefrugalhomemaker.com/2018/10/26/diy-rustic-wood-shelves-diy-toilet-paper-holder-made-with-plumbing-pipe-hardware/#comment-1935003 Fri, 30 May 2025 15:52:36 +0000 https://thefrugalhomemaker.com/?p=16790#comment-1935003 This is such a smart way to save money and still get a sturdy, industrial-chic shelf! I love the tip about Hobby Lobby’s half-off sales on floor flanges and caps — definitely going to check that out next time. The idea of pre-assembling the pipes and using a level to mark the holes sounds like a excellent method for making sure everything stays perfectly aligned. Thanks for sharing these detailed tips!

Comment on Farmhouse style Laundry room makeover (for less than $100!) by Rose Schwarz https://thefrugalhomemaker.com/2018/01/31/farmhouse-style-laundry-room-makeover-for-less-than-100/#comment-1934784 Sat, 10 May 2025 16:57:16 +0000 https://thefrugalhomemaker.com/?p=16303#comment-1934784 I’m undertaking a similar mudroom project what is the height of the ceiling in that room? And what is the height and depth of the cabinets along with the attic crown molding? Do you feel that you have enough clearance when you open the lid? Also, do you find that you can reach the lower shelf easily? It would be very helpful for me only because I’ve had so many people tell me that I need it bigger cabinets, taller cabinets not to mount them at the ceiling, which I do not care for the lowered Cabinet due to the fact it causes causes a problem when you go to change the paint color and you have such a small area above the cabinets to try to paint.

I’m thinking they won’t because the paint will act like glue and keep them closed.
